The article deals with the actual methods of teaching English to students at maritime universities taking into account the
specifics of future work in a mixed crew. Such specificity requires quality training to ensure effective and safe work in the
international environment, to compete successfully in the international labour market. It is necessary to combine different
teaching methods in order to improve the quality of education and training of marine engineers. English classes shouldbe focused not only on reading, understanding and translating special technical texts and articles, but also on developing
necessary communication skills for professional and daily discussions, business correspondence and communication
with colleagues in everyday life. It is necessary to pay special attention to students’ independent work, develop a creative
approach to the material, and motivate them to use existing information technologies. It is important for a teacher to know
and master the latest methods of teaching a foreign language in order to be able to select the best teaching methods in
accordance with the future needs of students. Conferences, independent students’ work with various information sources
or specific information prepared by the teacher, project technologies use, trainings and other activities based on the use of
information and computer technologies have become an integral part of our lives. It is becoming increasingly important and
provides completely new opportunities for creative work. In addition, it allows teachers to introduce completely new forms
and methods of teaching that meet the needs of a dynamic educational process. The article focuses on the methods that are
gaining relevance in view of the distance and blended learning development, and have new innovative forms and approaches
to the learning organization and interaction with students. New teaching methods can make positive changes in the process
of foreign language learning in marine engineering specialities and improve the quality of education and training.
